Step by step

Which scan are you having?

Tap your scan. Everything you need to do is listed in order.

X-ray

Usually none

Digital X-ray

  1. Wear clothing without metal (zips, hooks, buttons).
  2. Remove jewellery from the area being X-rayed.
  3. If you are or might be pregnant, tell the staff before your X-ray.

When to start

Walk in

Most X-rays take a few minutes and need no appointment.

Whole abdomen

Fasting

Whole abdomen ultrasound

  1. Don’t eat for 6 to 8 hours before the scan.
  2. Small sips of plain water are fine. Avoid tea, coffee, milk and chewing gum.
  3. Diabetic? Tell us when you book so we can see you early.

When to start

6 to 8 hours before

A morning slot is easiest, so you can fast overnight.

Pelvis and KUB

Full bladder

Pelvis, KUB and early pregnancy

  1. Drink 4 to 5 glasses (about 1 litre) of water.
  2. Don’t pass urine until the scan is done.
  3. A full bladder lets us see the organs clearly.

When to start

1 hour before

Start drinking water an hour before your appointment.

Pregnancy

Bring documents

Pregnancy scans

  1. Bring your gynaecologist’s referral slip and a photo ID. Both are required by law (Form F).
  2. Bring earlier scan reports so we can compare growth.
  3. Wear loose, two-piece clothing for easy access to your tummy.

When to start

On the day

Later-pregnancy scans usually need no fasting or full bladder.

3D / 4D

Bring documents

3D and 4D scan

  1. Bring your referral slip and a photo ID.
  2. Drink plenty of water for 2 to 3 days before. It helps the images.
  3. If baby is shy, we may ask you to walk a little and try again.

When to start

26 to 32 weeks

Your baby’s face is easiest to see in this window. [CONFIRM]

Doppler and small parts

Usually none

Doppler and small parts

  1. No special preparation for thyroid, breast, neck or limb scans.
  2. Wear clothing that lets us reach the area easily.
  3. Bring earlier reports if you have them.

When to start

No prep needed

Abdominal Doppler may need fasting. We’ll tell you when you book.

Always bring

Three things for every visit.

Doctor's prescription

Or the referral slip from your doctor, so we do the right scan.

Earlier reports

Any previous reports and films, so we can compare.

A photo ID

Required by law for every pregnancy scan.
